SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS: Service rifle or replica.  A training area or field

PERFORMANCE STEP 1: Individual actions during an immediate halt.

  1. When a Marine detects the enemy before being detected they give the signal for freeze
  2. The Marine halts in place, weapon at the ready, and remains absolutely motionless and quiet until further signals or orders are given.

PERFORMANCE STEP 2: Individual actions during air observation.

The immediate action when an enemy or unidentified aircraft is heard or observed:

  1. The first Marine hearing or sighting an aircraft that may be a threat signals freeze.
  2. Every Marine halts in place until the unit leader identifies the aircraft and gives further signals or orders.
  3. Marines should not look up at the aircraft as sunlight can reflect off their faces even when camouflaged.

PERFORMANCE STEP 3: Individual actions during air attack.

The immediate action drill for a low-level air attack is:

  1. The first member sighting an attacking aircraft shouts, “Aircraft,” followed by the direction of the incoming attack: front, left, rear or right
  2. The unit moves quickly into a line formation, spread out, at right angles (perpendicular) to the aircraft’s direction of travel
  3. As each member comes on line, using the available cover, they position their body perpendicular to the aircraft’s direction of travel, to present the shallowest target possible
  4. Between attacks seek better cover
  5. The unit leader must give the command and coordinate firing on the aircraft

PERFORMANCE STEP 4: Individual actions during an indirect fire attack.

When under indirect fire from the enemy, such as a mortar attack, Marines will react accordingly in the following manner:

  1. Immediately hit the ground and seek cover
  2. Maintain security within designated sector of fire
  3. Respond to the unit leader’s commands and orders

PERFORMANCE STEP 5: Individual actions upon contact with a sniper.

Initial contact is made when the sniper fires the first shot.  The unit must react immediately to get behind the enemy sniper position in order to kill or capture the enemy sniper.

  1. The element or Marine in contact takes cover and attempts to ID the firing position
  2. The Marine notifies the unit leader in order for the leader to maneuver against the enemy sniper
